Position Summary

In conjunction with the Director of the Office of Clinical Experiences and Partnerships [OCEP], the Clinical Specialist [Specialist] plays a pivotal role in realizing the partnership vision of the School of Education (SoE). The Specialist helps articulate agreements to create sustainable relationships among OCEP, SoE faculty, teachers, and schools and school districts. The Specialist maintains continuous connections with schools and teachers to place (and track) teacher candidates from early clinical experiences through the culminating experience (student teaching or residency). The Specialist manages relationships with the schools and provides support for university mentors, mentor teachers and candidates.

This work requires an understanding of learning to teach, strong interpersonal and communication skills, knowledge of school/district policy and personnel, and a keen attention to detail. The Specialist will also work with other SoE personnel and a variety of community stakeholders to gather feedback about the SoE teacher candidates and to systematically document teacher candidate placement data. Finally, the Specialist oversees and continuously upgrades communication systems, tools and documents of the OCEP, ensuring the usefulness of web and social media postings and creating usable internal and external communications around clinical partnerships for a variety of audiences (SoE Dean, advising office, marketing committee, etc).

Duties/Responsibilities

40% Teacher Candidate Support and Development

The Specialist oversees teacher candidate support processes across all clinical experiences. Support includes facilitating communication among candidates, mentors, faculty and school leaders. The Specialist provides direction and oversight to monitor candidates’ progress and relationships with sites and districts. The Specialist serves as the primary point of contact for all university mentors.

30% Development of sites and clinical experiences
Along with the Director, the Specialist builds and maintains strong and mutually beneficial relationships with district and school leaders. The Specialist implements a strategy for intentional placement of students in schools. In collaboration with the Director, faculty members and school/district leaders, the Specialist facilitates the selection of clinical experiences. The Specialist understands state licensure standards, program values and contextual knowledge of school practices.

The Specialist works collaboratively with the Director to screen, monitor and collect data on clinical experiences and their impact on candidate learning. In conjunction with the Coordinator (of OCEP), the Specialist will maintain database(s) on placements and support efficient and relevant data collection.

20% OCEP Policies and Communications
The Specialist communicates policies clearly and professionally to teacher candidates, faculty, host and mentor teachers, district leaders and partners. The Specialist also provides direction in the development and refinement of OCEP policies and procedures and ensures that the licensure pathways adhere to both university accreditation requirements and those mandated by state agencies. The Specialist provides feedback and content for all website and social media communications, and helps facilitate OCEP events. The Specialist will also represent OCEP at times in various department, university and community level meetings, functions and events.

10% Special Projects / Other Duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in the field of education.
At least 2 years of coaching, mentoring, supervisory or leadership experience in education.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree;
3 or more years of relevant coaching or supervisory experience working with teacher candidates (e.g., Field Instructor, Field Liaison, University Supervisor);
Demonstrated experience in clinical program development (e.g., experience developing mentor curriculum, leading program orientations that include field experiences or student teaching);
Graduate or undergraduate teaching experience in a teacher education program in an accredited institute of higher education.
Experiences with policies and procedures, and/or trainings in higher education or an educational environment.
Experience gathering date and conducting data analysis for use in program improvement efforts.
Must possess an understanding of accreditation standards.
Knowledge of state teacher licensure requirements.
