Position Summary

The Communication Arts & Sciences Department cultivates skill in understanding, evaluating, and producing communication across all contexts and media available.

This open position begins Fall 2017. This one year position is not a tenure-track hire, but may be renewed on an annual basis. The position requires a generalist in communication studies to support the existing strengths found in our communication studies degree. The teaching load is four courses per semester. Time will also be devoted to advising in student media. Courses assigned will be from the department curriculum and the courses in general studies (i.e. Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Intercultural communication, Communication Theory).

Duties/Responsibilities

1) Teach four courses per semester and serve as an advisor for student media. This includes preparing for courses assigned, assessing student progress and the integration of technology into course content and delivery. May be asked to teach online or in hybrid courses and possibly during the day, evening and weekend as needed.

2) Embrace the department’s teaching philosophy that balances disciplinary theory with applied knowledge and demonstrated practical experience.

3) Teach students from diverse backgrounds and from a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented groups.

Required Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Human Communication, Communication Studies, Mass Communication, Media Studies, Communication Arts or closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

1) Doctoral degree in Human Communication, Communication Studies, Mass Communication, Media Studies, Communication Arts, or closely related field.

2) University teaching experience;

3) Classroom technology skills including internet-enabled and hybrid learning;

4) Industry experience in the candidates area of specialization in communication.

5) Ability to integrate technology into course content and use available technology in teaching; and

6) Demonstrate the ability to teach from a perspective that includes non-traditional students and diverse urban groups including U.S. ethnic minorities, other marginalized groups, and/or women.

7) Experience working with and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse urban student population including (but not limited to) students of color, LBGTQIA students, students from low-income backgrounds, first-generation students, students with disabilities, undocumented students, non-traditional students, student veterans, and English language learners.
