Position Summary

The Department of Modern Languages invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Spanish to begin in August 2018. The successful candidate will teach 4 courses (12 credits) per semester. MSU Denver is committed to excellence in teaching, and expects its faculty to engage in student-oriented instruction, scholarly activity, and service.

Duties/Responsibilities

Teach Spanish language undergraduate courses at the annual academic year load of 24 semester credit hours or the equivalent, which will include day, evening, and weekend courses, as needed. Deliver linguistics-based courses in Spanish (such as advanced grammar, phonetics, and history of the language), courses on language pedagogy, as well as general courses on Spanish language and/or Hispanic cultures. In addition to teaching regularly assigned courses in Spanish, must have the ability to contribute to foreign language instruction pedagogy, as follows: assist with the coordination of the courses for pre-service teachers; advise students enrolled in the K-12 Foreign Language Licensure programs; assist with the development of curriculum for language methodology courses; supervise the pre-service teacher field experience.

The successful candidate will also engage in scholarly activity and service.

Required Qualifications

PhD in target language or related field. Doctorate degree conferred by December 2017.

Preferred Qualifications

Doctoral Degree in target language. TEACHING EXCELLENCE: evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching, including delivery of general education courses and the ability to teach about ethnic minorities; experience in teaching students from diverse backgrounds; sustained commitment to serving under-represented groups in higher education. PROFICIENCY-BASED INSTRUCTION: experience in proficiency-based language instruction; interest and capability in new and emerging learning and instructional technologies and their integration in the teaching environment and service learning; knowledge of national language proficiency standards. MENTORING OF TEACHING STAFF: experience with coordinating teaching staff or with the preparation of foreign language teachers; commitment to working across departments and across structures; ability to serve as liaison with the Secondary, K-12 and Educational Technology Department; knowledge of language-based proficiency exams and content exams required for K-12 world language licensure. • Experience working with and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse urban student population including (but not limited to) students of color, LBGTQIA students, students from low-income backgrounds, first-generation students, students with disabilities, undocumented students, non-traditional students, student veterans, and English-language learners.
