Position Summary

The Department of Africana Studies of Metropolitan State University of Denver invites applicants for one (1) faculty Lecturer position, beginning Fall 2018. The successful candidate will have a doctorate in Africana Studies or a doctorate/terminal degree in a related humanities or social science field with a formal concentration in or significant research and teaching in Africana Studies. Applicants with demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate courses on the African Diaspora, particularly the Gullah Experience, are strongly encouraged to apply. To ensure full consideration, applications should be received by December 15, 2017. However, applications will be accepted until interviews begin.

The University is particularly interested in applicants who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented groups.

Duties/Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to teach five (5) courses per semester, including Introduction to Africana Studies, and a course on the Gullah Experience. The teaching schedule includes day, evening, online, and/or weekend classes.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in Africana Studies or closely related discipline in the social sciences or humanities.

Preferred Qualifications

Doctorate in Africana Studies or closely related discipline in the social sciences or humanities. At least one year teaching experience in the field of Africana Studies at an urban college campus, as well as a demonstrated appreciation (through teaching or research) for the significance of gender in the Diasporic African experience. Ability to teach online. The successful candidate must have the ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population including (but not limited to) students of color, LBGTQIA students, students from low-income backgrounds, first-generation students, students with disabilities, undocumented students, non-traditional students, student veterans, and English-language learners.
