Position Summary

The Department of Africana Studies at Metropolitan State University of Denver invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level, beginning Fall 2018. The successful candidate will have a doctorate in Africana Studies with a concentration in the social sciences or a doctorate/terminal degree in a related social science field with a formal concentration in or significant research and teaching in Africana Studies. Candidates with demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate courses in Africana Studies are strongly encouraged to apply. To ensure full consideration, applications should be received by January 15, 2018. However, applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

The University is particularly interested in applicants who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented groups.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach day, online, evening and/or weekend classes (4 courses, 12 hours per semester), to advise students, to pursue an active research agenda, and to serve on department and College-wide committees. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of social science courses, including The Black Community, Social Movement and the Black Experience, as well as upper-level courses in their area of expertise, and the Introduction to Africana Studies. The appointee must also demonstrate a record of community service and a record of successful experience in the recruitment and/or retention of underserved students, including students of color.

Required Qualifications

A doctorate or ABD in Africana Studies with a concentration in the social sciences or a doctorate in a related social science field with a formal concentration in Africana Studies. ABD’s must complete the Ph.D. by July 2018.

Preferred Qualifications

At least one year teaching experience in the field of Africana Studies at an urban college campus, as well as a demonstrated appreciation (through teaching or research) for the significance of gender in the global African experience. Ability to design and teach a course in Hip-Hop Culture or a course in quantitative research methods is an added advantage.
